On 11-16-2015, in the Chapel at the Maximum Security Unit, with rain from a thunderstorm dripping through the ceiling into plastic containers, I led the following ‘Map Meditation’. I experienced a mind blowing revelation.
Together, we focused on our breath, the vibrations, the sounds, the tone, the feelings one was having in this moment. I asked people to imagine looking down at a map. From this point, I said, you can see the freeway clearly with all the exit ramps leading to roads and various cities and towns. Notice how all the things neatly fit together in the big picture. As you explore the map, sometimes you know exactly where you are and other times, not so much. Notice side road distractions that are close to your path yet remain focused on your journey.
Sometimes, it may look like you’re on the right road yet you feel lost. It is in these moments that we need to stop and get our focus and figure things out. It is deep within, in our inner stillness, where despite the noise around us we grasp the instinct necessary for the moment. It is in this stillness that we find ourselves at the well spring of wisdom. It is the meeting place between what you know and what you sense, that draws you from the good and leads you into the great; from the ordinary to the extraordinary. When we stand in the shadow of all we know, we must step forth in faith. It is in this heightened sense of awareness that we sense the tone, the vibration on the moment. Listen to your heart. It is time to find your way back.
As I whispered into the mic at the end of the meditation, I felt a surge of energy. I could feel the storm outside in my bones. Later, in my cell, I could still feel the storm in my bones. In that moment I remembered in my years of study regarding the Power of Sacred Words and Mantras that are everywhere in All Religions of the world, I saw in my mind the "Word", the "Mantra", as One: the Map, the Refuge and the Guide in the storms of life.
